Ungheni District is located in western Moldova, on the border with Romania, and comprises 74 localities. With a population of 75 804 inhabitants, the district represents one of the most important regions in the center of the country, both economically and through its strategic position. The average gross salary in the region is 10 450 MDL.
The geographical positioning of the district is particularly advantageous. Ungheni is located 106 km from Chisinau, 47 km from the city of Iași in Romania, just 257 km from the Giurgiulesti International Free Port – the country's main logistics hub with access to the Danube and the Black Sea – and 319 km from the port of Odesa. Additionally, the Sculeni customs point (22 km) offers direct and rapid access to the European Union, an essential aspect for commercial activities and export-import operations.
The economy of Ungheni District is diversified and continuously expanding, based on agriculture, textile industry, and processing industry. The district's industry is dominated by textile fiber processing, which represents over 80% of total industrial activities. Other industrial branches include spinning, carpet and rug manufacturing, as well as the production of car seat covers and fertilizers. A key element in the economic and industrial development of the district is the "Ungheni-Business" Free Economic Zone, which attracts investments and supports the growth of economic competitiveness.
Also under development in the district is the Beresti multimodal logistics complex, which will be built on approximately 18 hectares of land. The project envisions the development of modern infrastructure adapted for all types of terrestrial freight transport, including railway and road access routes, container cranes, cargo handling platforms, and warehouses. This infrastructure will ensure efficient and rapid operation of logistics flows.
The district is home to companies of national and international reference, such as Lear Corporation – specialized in automotive equipment production; Euro Yarns – synthetic yarn manufacturer; and Unicorn Carpets – carpet and moquette producer.
