Orhei district is strategically located in the center of the Republic of Moldova, on the banks of the Raut River, just 48 km north of Chisinau. It comprises 75 localities, with a population of 79 242 inhabitants and an average gross salary of 9 895 lei.
The district functions as an important road hub, connecting all major regional centers, which ensures rapid access to the main markets and commercial routes in the country. It also has easy access to the European Union through the Sculeni-Ungheni customs point, being located at the same time only 270 km from Giurgiulesti port, 190 km from Odesa port, and 145 km from Iasi city.
A subzone of the Free Economic Zone "Bălți" operates on the district's territory, which creates attractive conditions for investment and industrial development. The district's economic activity is diversified, with a significant share of agriculture and processing industry.
Orhei District also distinguishes itself through its tourism potential, hosting some of the most visited attractions in the Republic of Moldova - Orheiul Vechi – a unique archaeological and natural complex. The area is also rich in other tourist attractions, which stimulates the continuous development of rural guesthouses, agrotourism services, and investments in recreational infrastructure. Successful companies at national and international level operate in the district, such as SE Bordnetze, with approximately 4,000 employees, representing a major player in the automotive sector. In the food industry and winemaking, Orhei-Vit and Château Vartely hold a significant share, while in the bakery sector, Brodetchi company holds a top position in the local market.
