Ocnita district is located in the far north of the Republic of Moldova and includes Naslavcea, the northernmost point of the country. The district comprises 33 localities and has a population of 37 257. The average gross monthly salary is 8 671 MDL.
Ocnița benefits from convenient access to the European Union via the Lipcani border crossing, located 62 km away, and is only a few kilometers from the Ukrainian border. It is approximately 232 km from the capital city, Chisinau, and about 177 km from Iasi, Romania. The Port of Odesa in Ukraine is 438 km away, while the Giurgiulesti International Free Port is 328 km away—providing vital links to European trade corridors and maritime transport routes. The district is also an important railway hub, with nearly 80 km of railway infrastructure.
The local economy is primarily driven by agriculture, focusing on cereal crops and perennial plantations such as apples, plums, and cherries. These are complemented by an active food and processing industry, which includes canned goods and other industrial products. Trade and services also represent significant sectors within the district’s economy. Ocnita is rich in natural resources, including quartz sand (used in glass manufacturing, construction, and metallurgy), clay (a raw material for bricks and tiles), lime, and quartz gravel.
Several successful businesses operate in the district, such as Agro Business Group SRL, which specializes in cereal cultivation; Fiting SA, a leading manufacturer of hardware products; and Tezeu-Lux SA, a company engaged in mineral extraction and the production of quartz sand and lime.
