Cahul district is located in the southwest of the Republic of Moldova, on the border with Romania, and comprises 55 localities. With a population of 72 775 inhabitants, the district represents one of the most important regions in the southern part of the country, both economically and strategically. The average gross salary in the region is 10 450 lei.
The district's geographical positioning is particularly advantageous. Cahul is situated 168 km from Chisinau, 171 km from the Romanian city of Iasi, only 50 km from the Giurgiulesti International Free Port – the country's main logistics hub with access to the Danube and Black Sea – and 295 km from the port of Odesa. Additionally, the Cahul-Oancea customs point offers direct and rapid access to the European Union, an essential aspect for commercial activities and export-import operations.
The economy of Cahul District is diversified, based on agriculture, processing industry, and the services sector. Agriculture occupies a central place in the economic structure, being oriented toward the production of cereals, oilseed crops, viticulture, and animal husbandry. Agricultural activities are supported by fertile soils and favorable climate. The processing industry is well developed, with production units in the fields of canned goods, vegetable oils, cheeses, wines, textiles, and construction materials. Also operating in Cahul is Danube Logistics – the general operator and investor of the International Free Port.
The district has modern economic infrastructure, with the Cahul Industrial Park operating on its territory, covering an area of 23 hectares, and Subzone No. 18 of the Balti Free Economic Zone. The district is home to companies of national and international reference, such as Dsc Draexlmaier Sisteme de Cablare – specialized in cable harness production; Iri-Carmen – active in cereal cultivation; and Orizontul-Lux – a company in the field of construction works.
