Economic growth and GDP structure
In 2025 gross domestic product amounted to EUR 18,045 million, up 2.4% in real terms on the previous year. GDP per capita reached EUR 7,644. In the first quarter of 2026 the economy grew by 0.4% year on year.
Growth was driven primarily by information and communication technologies, which contributed 0.9 percentage points, held a 7.5% share of GDP and recorded a 12.5% increase in gross value added. Agriculture, education and construction followed.
Investment
Investment is the main driver of economic growth. In 2025 gross fixed capital formation rose by 16.9% in real terms and accounted for 22.0% of GDP, contributing 3.5 percentage points to economic growth — more than any other component of aggregate demand.
The direct investment position reached EUR 5,373 million as of 31 December 2025, equivalent to 29.8% of GDP and around EUR 2,257 per inhabitant. Direct investment accounted for 38.8% of total external liabilities, representing a significant component of the external financing of the economy.
Structure of foreign direct investment
Accumulated equity capital is concentrated in financial and insurance activities (33%), trade (27%) and manufacturing (17.7%) — together around 78% of the total. These are followed by information and communication technologies (5.2%), real estate activities (4.9%), transport and storage (3.6%) and energy (3.1%).
European capital dominates the geographical structure. Investment originating from the European Union reached EUR 3,144 million at the end of 2025, up from approximately EUR 1.5 billion in 2018, with the EUR 3 billion threshold exceeded for the first time in the second quarter of 2025.
Foreign trade
With trade in goods and services equivalent to 104.1% of GDP, the Republic of Moldova is an economy strongly integrated into international trade. Exports of goods totalled approximately EUR 3,340 million in 2025. Expressed in the currency of the source statistics (USD), exports grew by 6.4% on the previous year.
The European Union absorbed 67.5% of exports, compared with 58.6% in 2022, while the share of the CIS countries fell to 5.9%. The main destinations are Romania, Türkiye, Italy, Czechia and Ukraine.
Services
Exports of services totalled EUR 2,835 million in 2025, generating a surplus of EUR 918 million, a structural counterweight to the deficit in trade in goods.
Exports of computer services totalled EUR 743 million, equivalent to around 4.1% of GDP, while the surplus of this category amounted to EUR 634 million. Information and communication technologies were the single largest contributor to economic growth in 2025.
Human capital
The average gross monthly wage stood at approximately EUR 790 in 2025, up 1.9% in real terms. In information and communication technologies the average was approximately EUR 1,825. Employment totalled 774 thousand people, with an unemployment rate of 3.8%.
Higher education enrolled 62.9 thousand students in the 2025/2026 academic year, rising for the second consecutive year, while technical vocational education enrolled 50.3 thousand.
