The district's population is approximately 14 914 inhabitants, with an average gross monthly salary of 9 220 lei. Despite being one of the country's smallest districts in terms of number of localities and population, Basarabeasca enjoys an important geostrategic position that gives it an essential logistics role in the southern part of the country.

The district stands out as the most important railway junction in southern Moldova, with a 47 km railway network that facilitates rapid commercial connections, particularly with Ukraine. The distance to the capital Chisinau is 95 km, to the Leușeni customs point is 116 km, and to Giurgiulești Free International Port is 148 km. The city of Iași is located 187 km away, while the port of Odesa is approximately 214 km distant.

The local economy is primarily supported by three sectors: agriculture, processing industry, and the tertiary sector (trade and services). Agriculture plays an important role in the district's economic structure, supported by fertile soils and a favorable climate. The processing industry is represented by companies active in agricultural product processing, winemaking, and food production.

Several nationally recognized companies operate in the district, including Ltd. Sadac-Agro and Ltd. Simlar-Agro – active in agriculture; the Basarabia-Lwin Invest winery complex – in the winemaking industry; and Ltd. Silvia Bombonici – specialized in the textile industry. These enterprises actively contribute to job creation and the revitalization of local economic life.
