The ICT industry is, beyond any doubt, the most dynamic branch of economy in the Republic of Moldova. Two major factors have played well for the unprecedented development of this sector: the fact that local specialists belong to relatively young generations and are very active from the economic point of view, on the one hand, and the advantageous conditions for experimenting with the new technologies in Moldova, including the single tax rate of 7%, on the other hand.
Data for 2019 show that exports of IT services increased by about a third compared to the previous year - up to 198 million US dollars, exceeding sales abroad of alcoholic beverages and wines. The IT sector’s share is already comparable to the entire agricultural sector of the country, which continues to play an important role in the economy. The Republic of Moldova has a significant potential for the development of BPO and is becoming attractive for international companies looking for locations where the legislation is close to that of the EU and the operational costs are low.
Fiber optic and wireless broadband internet, including mobile internet, is present in all urban areas and is received by about 90% of telephone subscribers. The Republic of Moldova applies the lowest costs to the Internet, at the highest speed, in Europe. More than 90 companies compete in this market. The world premieres with 3G and 4G technologies took place namely in the Republic of Moldova.
Thanks to the developed telecommunications infrastructure, the penetration of mobile telephony is over 100%, the signal being stable in the border areas of neighboring states. The density of mobile telephony exceeded 106% in 2019.
The Republic of Moldova has a high technology park - "Moldova IT Park" - in Chisinau. The country's capital, among others, has been designated the “European city of 2020” for its support the IT sector.
