The European Union has announced the expansion of access for agricultural products from the Republic of Moldova, particularly fruits, strengthening the country’s position as a competitive supplier on the EU market. The measure involves increasing tariff quotas for plums, apples, table grapes, and cherries – key products of Moldova’s horticultural sector.

According to recent data, Moldova ranks among the top 20 global exporters of plums, walnuts, cherries, apricots, rapeseed, apples, and grapes, thanks to an extended production season and favorable climate conditions. The country has the highest vineyard density in the world and continues to strengthen its presence on European markets with increasingly certified agricultural products that meet EU standards.

“The expansion of quotas for Moldovan fruits reflects both the quality of our production and the trusted partnership with the European Union. The Republic of Moldova ranks 4th in cherry exports, 6th in plum exports, 13th in apple exports, and 18th in grape exports, confirming its role as a competitive player on international markets. This new trade framework provides our producers with stability and access to a major distribution channel,” stated Natalia Bejan, Director of the Invest Moldova Agency.

“We express our gratitude to all institutions that actively supported our efforts toward the permanent liberalization of fresh fruit exports and we remain committed to promoting free and sustainable access to the EU market, in line with the Association Agreement.” — Moldova Fruct Association

In 2023, Moldova positioned itself among the world’s leading fruit exporters and continued to expand its horticultural product portfolio to demanding markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

In 2024, edible fruits and nuts accounted for 6.57% of the country’s total exports, with over 266,000 tons delivered — mainly to Europe. The EU is the primary destination market for Moldovan fruits (plums, apples, table grapes, and cherries), within the framework of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA).

To support Moldovan companies’ access to European markets, the Invest Moldova Agency is implementing dedicated programs such as Bridge – a platform connecting exporters with major European distributors; Export Missions, which link Moldovan exporters with partners in target countries; and the Grant Program for Business Associations, which helps associations and their members enhance their export promotion capacity.
